Millie stifled the urge to lift a fluttery hand to her hair. I must look a sight. John hadn’t mentioned it nor commented on the disarray that greeted him when he walked through the door, but he must have seen both.

He removed his hat and coat and set them on the dresser. With the movement, a cold scent of snow wafted up from him. In spite of his wintery aura, she had the sudden, overwhelming desire to be in his arms.

Absurd.

She had no strength to further examine the yearning, to wonder at the change in her. She’d all but flown from him the last time they’d spoken. He’d driven her away with his provoking remarks about Stephen. I assure you, sir, working for your brother was easy compared to managing his household without him. But the thought of Stephen still stung.

Since becoming Katherine’s nurse, Millie had been condescended to and sniffed at. Katherine had implied that her “rustic” presence was unwelcome, and John had hinted that she still possessed feelings for his married brother. But only Stephen had been cruel enough to suggest that she’d done less than her best when Florence lay dying.

And he certainly left me in a lurch when he took off in the night.

She’d borne the burdens of the past few days alone as best she could, having no other choice. But now John was here. Steady, strong, capable of rescuing her. Still, the nurse in her, trained to confront a crisis and see it through to the end, refused to be coddled.

And anyway, he’d no doubt be appalled to find himself holding his mother’s weeping nurse in his arms. Especially now, added to everything else. He must be reeling, just like the rest of us. Though Katherine had written him when Florence first fell ill, nobody kept him abreast of her worsening condition, at least, not that Millie was aware of. Her telegram must have been a shock to him.

He took off his gloves, and she saw that his hands were reddened with cold. “How is my mother holding up?” He blew hot air into his cupped palms.

The question puzzled her, though in her present state, anything might. “She’s in her room,” she said finally.

“And how is she doing?”

“Fairly well, I think.”

He knelt to put his gloves into his bag. “It’s good that the children are not still at Stephen’s house.” He inclined his head toward Lucy’s bed. “I see you’ve brought their things over here.”

“We considered letting them stay in their own home, in familiar surroundings, but thought it best for them to be with their grandmother and baby sister.”

He glanced up at her. “It’s a girl then?”

“It is.”

The light that brightened his eyes was chased away by a frown. “You wrote that the babe is fragile.”

“We’re hoping she’ll prove tenacious.” It was the best Millie could offer.

His frown deepened. He stood.

“We decided to delay Florence’s funeral until you came home, sir. Provided you arrived promptly.”

He lifted a brow. “You doubted that I would?”

She shook her head.
